Last Thursday, I went to the bi-weekly meeting of the Houston Photochrome Club. When I pulled into the parking lot at the Community Center, I noticed close to a hundred campaign signs. I turned out that the Tracy Gee Community Center is one of the early vote locations in Harris County. Unlike in other parts of Europe, voters can cast their votes during the two weeks before the election on November 3rd. There are quite a lot of choices to make, since the voters need to decide about Houston's mayor, City Council and controller, 11 proposed state constitutional amendments, Bellaire municipal offices, community college and public school boards and more. Maybe that’s why it is expected that only 25% of the Houstonians will vote in this election.

I was not aware of the elected official of City Controller. In most cities in Europe the city tax increased significantly over the last years; where it is unclear where this money is spend on. I think an elected official of City Controller could add transparency to the spending of the city council. In Europe, the city controller is officially appointed by the city council. So much for control.
